Growing up in Mississippi, you had two choices of who to root for, Ole Miss or Mississippi State (sorry USM, I am SEC biased). Some families are split where the husband roots for one team while the wife roots for another team. Well, I’m personally split and root for both, except during the Egg Bowl (the annual meet up of the two teams). My friends know where my loyalties lie when it comes to that game.
I love the pomp and circumstance of football; the tailgating, the rivalries, getting dressed up (yes, we dress up for football games in the South), the traditions, the wins, and losses. It is all just so much fun. Gameday in Oxford, Mississippi is one of the most notable places to experience such things. If you go, be sure to walk around the city square, grab a bite to eat at City Grocery, check out their infamous Square Books store where you can buy great books by Mississippi and Southern writers and take the double-decker bus from the square to the campus. There’s nothing like tailgating at The Grove before walking into Vaught-Hemmingway for the big game. After the big win last week, there’s only one thing left to say, Hotty Toddy! HYDR!
