May is one of my favorite months of the year. It’s my birthday month and Iroquois Steeplechase happens. This last May was quite tough after the loss of my beloved dog, Bella, so I was really looking forward to the distraction of Steeplechase. It was my third year in attendance. We’ve gone as guests of our sweet neighbors who’ve had a spot for 10+ years. It’s an all day event and I couldn’t believe how cold this year’s day was. I was so glad that I grabbed a blanket on the way out the door because I sure needed it. After we unpack the truck and the guys set up the truck deck (yes, that’s right…there’s a truck deck), we all have the annual breakfast burrito followed by the most amazing jello shots that you’ll ever try. We play corn hole, walk the grounds and pour our drinks waiting for the first race to start. The last race of the day is called the Iroquois Steeplechase and holds the biggest purse of the day. But before that race begins, they ‘release the hounds,’ which is my favorite part of the day. Once it’s over, we tear everything down, pack up and drive home sunburned, exhausted and richer in memories of the day. I can’t wait until next year!
