The Power of Personal Branding

As a branding photographer who specializes in helping service-based business owners show up with confidence, the most common roadblock people have when it comes to branding photos is what to wear. If you’ve ever felt that panic before a session wondering what in your closet is going to look good and represent you, you’re not alone. Here is my photographer’s guide for business owners on what to wear to your brand photoshoot.

What to Wear to Your Brand Photoshoot: A Photographer’s Guide for Business Owners

I completely understand people’s wardrobe concerns, because what you wear in your brand photos does matter. It sends a message to your potential clients, and you want it to be the right message. Clothing can communicate confidence, approachability, trustworthiness, and professionalism, among others. The opposite is also true, as the wrong choices can make your content feel disconnected, confusing, or not fully aligned with the business your trying to present.  The key is to choose clothes that reflect your brand but also make you feel comfortable and confident.

In order to do this, think about the colors that resonate with your brand, your story, and your style, as well as your messaging and overall vibe. A creative business owner may lean into more relaxed, expressive styling, while a luxury service provider may want something more elevated and refined. In both situations, the business owner would want to select colors and styles that reflect how they want their brand to be perceived while also choosing clothing options that fit in with their personal style and make them feel good.

You Don’t Need Tons of Outfits. You Just Need the Right Ones

A lot of people overpack clothing for their branding sessions, bringing way too many outfit options, multiple pairs of shoes, and random pieces they panic-bought the week before. I’m here to tell you that more outfits does not automatically create better photos.

A stronger approach is choosing a few intentional looks that each serve a purpose and represent how you want to show up. This might look like, one polished, professional look, another more casual, approachable outfit, and then another outfit that reflects your day-to-day personal work style. This creates variety, without making your gallery feel disconnected, and tells an intentional story. The best brand sessions feel cohesive while still giving you flexibility in your content that you can use in a variety of ways.

Colors Matter More Than You Realize

One of the easiest ways to elevate your brand photos instantly is through a consistent color palette.

Random outfits with unrelated colors can make your website, social media, and marketing materials feel visually scattered. However, when your wardrobe aligns with your brand colors, everything starts to feel more intentional and recognizable. This doesn’t mean you need every outfit to perfectly match or you need to go buy clothing in your brand colors. You just need your colors to work together.

A combination of neutrals, brand tones, and complementary colors tend to photograph best because they create consistency across your content. When your colors complement each other, your entire brand presence feels more polished.

Style Matters But Comfort Matters More

One of the biggest mistakes people make is choosing outfits they don’t actually feel comfortable in. If you constantly adjust your clothing, feel restricted, or don’t feel like yourself, it will show up in your photos. Confidence always photographs well – it shows up in your posture, your smile, and how you carry yourself. When you feel good, you naturally look more relaxed and authentic on camera. The best outfits you can select are the ones that make you feel comfortable, confident, and like the best version of yourself.

The Real Goal of Branding Session Styling

Most people don’t struggle with style. They struggle with knowing how to apply their style to their brand, which is completely normal. Once there’s a clear plan for your session and you know how the images will be used, what you want your brand to communicate, and what types of content you actually need, selecting outfits becomes less stressful.

If you’re a Nashville or Franklin, TN service-based business owner planning a branding session and feeling unsure about what to wear, you don’t have to figure it out alone. Part of my branding experience is creating a clear plan so your outfits, locations, and images all work together to reflect your business intentionally and professionally.
