The Power of Personal Branding

As a branding photographer, I’m often asked if I can “edit something out in Photoshop” during my sessions. It’s one of the most common questions I hear, actually. So today, I wanted to share a little bit about my philosophy on photo editing and retouching. When I’m capturing your branding session, I want to capture who you really are. That goes beyond the perfect location and outfits. It’s about really photographing YOU – as you are now. Over-editing and retouching can change how a person looks, and that impacts how well your brand connects with your ideal clients.

What I will edit out

Yes – and no. I’m happy to do some retouching for your branding photos. During retouching, I’ll clean up things like blemishes, bruises, scrapes or scratches. These are things that aren’t a part of you permanently. I want you to feel like your best –  but sometimes life happens. So, I’m happy to take care of that. I’ll also lighten wrinkles and brighten under eyes or whiten teeth (if needed). Those are all things that help us to feel our best in portraits. And I want to be clear, not all photo editing and retouching is bad. It just needs to be done with intention.

What won’t you edit?

But, what I will not do is any body altering editing. I won’t make anyone thinner or a certain shape and I won’t remove things like double chins. First off, I believe that with good posing, we can help you look and feel your best – so you still look like you. It’s important to me to make you feel confident during our session, so you don’t worry about it when the photos are delivered! Remember, you want to look like yourself in your portraits. This helps build trust with your audience – and you’re more likely to actually use your photos if you look and feel like your best self.

So yes, while I will work with you on some of the edits for your photos, just know that I will not make you look like someone else. I promise you, you want to look like yourself in your branding portraits!
